review 1: I was first introduced to Francine Prose's work by reading the novel The Blue Angel. This prompted me to read several other works of hers and continue to grow my to-read list with her work. This book was just as a pleasure to read as the other novels. She always has a good sense of capturing female characters in her novels. The connection between these two sister is clearly outlined in the first chapter and keeps growing throughout the novel despite her sister's death. Meanwhile, the main character, Nico is unaware of her own growth. I find this novel to be really true to what a sister and parents would experience in real life to the lose of a sibling and child.
review 2: Francine Prose definitely write beautiful prose! This isn't the book to read if you'r
... moree reading for plot, but I thought it was a touching portrait of a teenage girl's experience grieving the loss of her older sister. Unlike other books about youth and grief (A Monster Calls, for example!), this didn't strike much of an emotional chord with me. I didn't feel a lot of empathy for her until the end when I found out the narrator was a middle aged woman like myself making sense of her loss of innocence. It was also then that the opening Hopkins poem "To a Young Child" really made sense. So, despite the powerful subject matter, and as much as I admired Prose's writing, it did fall sort of flat and felt a little bit like an intellectual exercise. less
