For this week, I decided to read March, a graphic novel trilogy written by Congressman John Lewis and Andrew Aydin, and illustrated by Nate Powell. I selected these books for two reasons. The first reason was that my professor for my class on Libraries in Multicultural Societies, brought these books in to class one day as an example of materials needed in a diverse library. Second, I chose this trilogy because in truth, I did not know many details of the Civil Rights Movement, and these books are a great teaching tool for this period of US history.
This trilogy is a crucial addition to any teen or young adult library. Not only do these graphic novels give great details to the Civil Rights Movement through the eyes of Congressman John Lewis, presenting it in the form of a graphic novel can make it more enticing for teens to read. Books and materials on the Civil Rights Movement are important in general., as they help to bridge the widening gap of time between the movement and today’s and future generations.

While the subject matter of March and Maus are different, both can be found on the same Goodreads List, History through Graphic Novels. Maus uses the graphic novel format to tell the story of Vladek and Anja Spiegelman as they lived through the Holocaust. Both March and Maus go back and forth from the “present” to the “past” in the telling of these stories. In Maus, we see the story as Art Spiegelman is interviewing his father. For March, we see the story as Senator John Lewis’s memories on the day of President Obama’s 2009 inauguration. What both of these sets of graphic novels does is bring to life periods of history that are losing their survivors.
