review 1: I love this graphic novel series. I read this first book not long after release in 2007, thus this is a re-read for me. I was a mega fan of the Looking Glass Wars and so glad to have stumbled into Frank Beddor's world of Wonderland turned on it's head for an interesting take on what really happened to "Alice" and her people. Hatter M is the "Mad Hatter" but more angry honestly then mad. He escapes the palace after Redd's coup and Queen Guinevere tells him to take Princess Alyss and hide in another realm until she is old enough to come back and take the rule from Redd. The graphic novel explains how Hatter M lost Alyss in the Pool of Tears and shares his search for her in other worlds and times. It's Black versus White magic the worlds are fighting for and with. Hatter runs... more into a villain for black magic around every corner. I love this guy as much as I love Redd. I want him to win against the Baroness Dvona and any other baddie that comes along. I want him to like Miss Pushikin and work with her. His saving the orphanage was fun and creepy as can be! The graphic novel is brilliantly snarky, deviously dark and beautifully illustrated. The legend of Hatter M and his deadly hat and regenerating knifes of death are so entertaining that you have to root for him. And I love when he loses his hat only to snap out quietly "...damn hat..." Go read this. It's beautifully done.
review 2: Based on the Looking Glass Wars series of novels by Frank Beddor, this graphic novel follows Hatter Madigan as he searches the real world for the lost Princess Alyss. What is briefly covered in the novels gets the full glossy treatment here, all gritty conflict and subterfuge and surprises as this grim denizen of Wonderland attempts to navigate our reality, only to find it full of ex-Wonderlander conspiracies. A great addition to the books, with an entrancing art style that well-conveys the mood of the books.-- Hillary D. less
