review 1: I almost hated this book. Almost, because I did, after all, finish the damn thing, and admittedly I felt I needed to know what was going to happen to these characters. However, that being said, I think the author wanted too badly to make this novel grisly, gritty, grimy, and gross, and forgot to include a compelling plot. I liked (or felt for) three of the characters, and the rest of them I wished a slow and painful death, which spoiler alert, most of them got. I understand what this book was trying to do- show a different side of life, one where meth is king and you earn your respect by being the meanest, toughest redneck around. I just don't think this book really went anywhere of significance, and too often the plot (if you can call it that) was thinned out in favor of ... moregruesome violence. I would have liked a bit more back story on Purcell, Jarhead and Tammy, and Fu (especially Fu). This book had a world of potential, and just fell flat for me. Like my husband said, there's only one Palahniuk, and Frank Bill ain't him. I can tell you this, though, I don't want to go within 50 miles of a Donnybrook.
review 2: Frank Bill has some imagination or he's someone to steer clear of. This book is similar to Bill's first book: set in rural Indiana with a cast of very damaged characters involved in some incredibly violent activity. Here Bill focuses on one story which escalates violence to a very high level. The stories in his first book were believable, this story not so much as it is a bit over the top. Even still this brutal book is well written and memorable. less

Grabs you by the balls, throws you around a few times, and still won't let go. An incredible read.

Non-stop, drug-addled, rural, backwoods violence and adrenaline. Not for the faint-hearted.
