review 2: An engaging but rather uneven debut collection. Bill's subject is the American redneck: his characters are poor, desperate, and brutish. Their hobbies include coon hunting, dog fighting, drunk driving, meth smoking, fist fighting, and other assorted
... moreforms of hell-raising. These violent, action-packed stories are given an extra charge from Bill's lean, jagged prose style. At their best, they combine the propulsive readability of high-octane pulp with an understated sense of emotional resonance and thematic ambiguity. Much of the time, however, the stories suffer from the fact that they are so similar in style and content; Bill is not yet a talent enough writer to bring the same verve and vitality to each of these 17 white-trash variations. A promising enough debut that I'll track down more of Bill's work in the future. less
