review 1: I’ve become a big fan of Warrington’s” Ethereal “series. I liked this book slightly less than the first, “Elfland” but still enjoyed it. This series perfect if you like fantasy fiction set in the real world with character driven stories. Like Charles De Lint, (who wrote a great review about his book, that’s how I found out about it), Warrington creates likable and believable human (or part human) characters.There is something about her works that remind me a little of the Bronte sisters, but less dreary and more contemporary and colourful
review 2: The second book in Freda Warrington's Aetherial Tales did not disappoint. Her writing is hauntingly beautiful, her settings and landscapes well drawn. The mystery and power of the plot take the reader... more from Cairndonan Estate on the northwest coast of Scotland to the fiery volcanic wastes of Mount Khafet in the Aetherial realm of Namaan and beyond; her prose allows one to feel the salt mist of the sea and smell the sulfurous smoke of the lava just as if you were there yourself. Mysteries caught within include a dramatic kidnapping, a tragic car accident, a lost child, a ghost, and more than one possible case of mistaken identity. Yet the reader never feels overwhelmed by the events taking place. The characters are well drawn and articulated and as they flow from one realm to another with fear, passion, anger, and regret the reader feels it, again, as if the emotions were our own. "Midsummer Night" draws you in with the mystery of the landscape and the haunting story doesn't let you go. less
