review 1: I have wanted to read Berlin 1961 for some time. The main reason is because I was there in mid August 1961 with my parents while this crisis was going on. I was one of the last westerners allowed into the East Zone a few days prior to the wall going up on Aug 13.This book is very well written and of great interest to others who have and have not visited Germany and Berlin. I have visited many times and lived a total of five years in West Germany and was always on the alert that war could be at any moment.I was also glad to see in Berlin 1961 that Kennedy was portrayed not as a demi god that history tried to support following his assassination, but weak in the first year as president who almost lost Berlin and caused another war. While the book is long, it moves quickly ... morewith anecdotal stories.
review 2: Overall, an interesting read, on a piece of history that has received much less attention than the Cuban Missile Crisis, which followed. The book goes into great detail to get inside the minds of the three main figures (Nikita Kruschev, John F. Kennedy, and Konrad Adenauer). However at times the book feels slow because of this attention to detail. It's a worthwhile read for those interested in history, especially those interested in the personalities of the leaders of the time. less
