review 2: This is one of those books that really does deserve to be a hit. I discovered it quite by chance in an Audible 2 for 1 sale and took a chance on it, not knowing anything much about it other than the sample clip I listened to appealed to my sense of humour. I'm very glad I did buy it, because it is amazingly good. I loved it from start to finish. You wouldn't think that a story of an irascible old man grieving after the death of his wife and trying (and failing) to find a way to commit suicide so he could be with her again, would be so wonderfully entertaining. But it is.It is, in turns, very funny and terribly sad. There are moments which catch you out laughing and make you want to weep for yet another tragic event in Ove's and Sonja's lives. And yet it isn't a miserable novel (full marks to Fredrik Backman for avoiding mawkish sentimentality). There are many times when you will find yourself nodding in agreement with Ove's point of view, feeling his anger, and laughing in agreement when yet another of life's irritations has got to him (it will help if you are nearer to Ove's age to appreciate some of these though!).He is a superb creation and I couldn't find a single thing to dislike about this story. It's on my favourites of 2014 list. less
