review 1: It would seem to me that writing a picture book biography for children on such a complicated individual as Johnny Cash would be hard. One question comes up: Do you sanitize it or not? Neri does a remarkable job at portraying more of the life leading up to Cash's musical career than the music career itself. Certain parts of Cash's life are highlighted in the author's note at the end and with the additional resources. Regardless of how you feel about how much do you share in a book for young readers, Neri does a nice job of introducing children to the music legend of Johnny Cash. The free verse also seemed to be a good choice of writing style for the book.
review 2: Although I won't recommend this for our Chickadee Award, I love this book! It is for an older audi
... moreence than our target group.Instead of paragraphs, the story of Cash's life is told in two or three vertical columns per page in this oversized book. Each page resembles a chapter, or segment of his life. I knew little about his life before fame, and the information here will be accessible for middle elementary students. Unless they are already fans, they may not be aware that each 'chapter' heading is the title of one of his songs. This could also be used in history lessons that include some of the events that affected his life: the Great Depression, the New Deal, television, and others. less
