review 1: This was my absolute favorite in the series. The series is properly climatic, and I will be disappointed if another isn't written to help lead me down off this precipice. I liked how he brought characters back without fully giving them back. People cannot come back from the dead, but it was beautifully reassuring to see that people are happy on the other side. It had a thrilling amount of mystery, terror, and fantasy without pulling the book too far in either direction.
review 2: This is the fourth in Mr. Lippert's fan fiction series about the adventures of Harry Potter's oldest son, James. The usual gang is here: James, Ralph, Zane, Rose, Albus, and the newest student, Harry's youngest--Lily.Merlin is dead, Petra is missing, James is the only one who can see
... more the Lady of Lake, and the Muggles know about the Magical World. James, Albus, and Ralph are back at Hogwarts, rejoining Rose, and Lily is beginning her first year. The new headmaster is very grim and Mr. Filch has a magic staff, allowing him to bully the students. There are also four magic cabinets which connect Hogwarts to Alma Aleron in the U.S., Drumstrang in Scandinavia (the location is deliberately vague), Beauxbatons in France, and Yorke Academy--a Muggle school in the U.K. In order to facilitate international goodwill, as well as understanding between the Muggle and the Magical worlds, students will be taking classes in each of the four academies. (You knew Zane can't be left out of the fun!) And it goes about as well as expected--not well at all!James meets a mysterious girl from Alma Aleron who manages to sneak into Hogwarts outside of classtime, which is theoretically impossible. Mr. Filch is handing out detentions right and left, including some he learned from Professor Dumbridge. There's a professor at Durmstrang who looks a lot like Professor Dumbledore. Petra and James have a mysterious connection and she warns him to stop what he's doing--but when did that ever work with a Potter? (Or a Weasley, for that matter!). The novel hints at origins, fills in some backstory, reunites many of the Order of the Phoenix, and doesn't spend a whole lot of time in the classroom. I'm not sure how James gets any of his homework done, unless he copies from Rose. :) Overall, a good story, albeit, Mr. Lippert stretches credulity a bit far, even for a magical universe. (How many coincidences can there be in one tale?) A great read for those who need a Potter-verse fix. less

The fourth and longest to date and most comfortably familiar, as we now know the JP world, and the arc returns to Hogwarts. I continue to be impressed by his ability to remain faithful without imitating - these are very much his own work, more complexly plotted and, well, not quite as smooth (not a bad thing, per se, just a different feel). This installment really showcases the biggest difference: it's a labor of love - for himself, his family, other fans - and as such he draws in just about anything any fan would want. I mean, there's hardly a person, place, event or thing which is not touched upon (okay, a bit of an exaggeration, but the list is rather extensive). The crowd pleaser aspects might be over the top and detracting for some, and there's good argument that with very little change this could have been the finale... but then again, there's a sense of him just hitting his stride and really nailing it.

4.5 stars. This book was written with the same charm that sucked me into the first of the James Potter books. While there were definitely some parts of the story I could have dealt without, I truly enjoyed this installment of the series. It kept me enthralled for most of the entire story, and I loved the end scene with the mirror. It brought a tear to my eye! While I am a Harry Potter purist, Lippert makes it his own, and makes it something enjoyable. There are parts when I have to remind myself that it's not actually real! I'll be excited to see what comes next.
