review 1: I liked the premise of this story - that Thomas Usher is a man that can see the dead. Despite this main character being depressed and riddled with guilt, the story hooked me in from the beginning. I thought the author's use of first person narrative was done fairly well. There were moments, however, when the narrator jumps back to events in his past in the middle of scenes that left me a bit confused at times. When a major incident occurs, involving a close friend, I hoped for a satisfying conclusion. The ending, however, only left me confused and disappointed that Thomas Usher's friend was never mentioned again within the last few pages. This novel certainly has some gore and some touching moments when Thomas Usher's dead wife and child are mentioned and the conclusion pa... moreves the way for the second in the series.
review 2: After I first started reading this book i couldn't really get into it which was caused more by it simply not being the right time. I was attempting to jump genres and that doesn't always work out so well for my personal reading experience. I really enjoy the way Mcmahon writes and feel that his ability to use paranormal/horror plot lines to express philosophical and or even spiritual understandings is what holds my attention and keeps me following along. I don't want the fact that this book took me a couple of times to get into to throw you off, it was really based on how wrapped up i was in the books I had read before. There is another book in the Thomas Usher series and I totally plan to get into that one as well. So what is it that really drew me to this book and more importantly kept me reading? For one I like any work of writing that kind of twists and basically messes around with different genres. I also love anything that deals with inter-dimensional experiences that can't be completely explained and therefore draws from the readers imagination. There is also a certain mystery/thriller aspect to this book although I would have enjoyed a little bit more in that area. By the end of this book Mcmahon really brings in a lot of the otherworldly ideas which leaves me believing that the next book will be even more involved which is definitely something to look forward too. If you enjoy detective type thrillers with other world/paranormal depth then I would say this would be right up your alley and an easy digestible journey. less

Started really well, but became surreal: sort of supernatural horror.

A great slice of noir served up 'pretty' and dead.
