review 1: Usually when I start books where I can't stand the characters, I put the book down. I kept reading this book because it is in both the elementary and junior high book competition. It's in both competitions so it must be good, I kept telling myself. This book is about a boy who decides to have adventures with his friends. The first adventure is to drive a bike off of a three story house, and somehow the child didn't die or even have major injuries.
review 2: Henry, Reed, and Riley are three twelve-year old boys on a mission for adventure. It all started one day when Henry came to the conclusion that they needed to stop sitting around and make a name for themselves. One by one, Henry came up with missions for the group. Their missions included things such a
... mores breaking records and solving mysteries. Each adventure had its fair share of difficulties such as tiger encounters and diapers in the face, but nothing stopped the trio. Along the way, the boys had learned that completing each mission was not only proving they were the adventure-type but that they were pretty strong as well. In the end, the boys took their confidence and did something great. They used their skills and friendship to put a bully in his place. On the last day of school that year they typed up flyers to go around the school with an insulting haiku and smashed old rabbit poop in the bully's gym shoes. The boys were not proud of the prank, but left the year feeling like they did, in fact make a name for themselves. I would recommend this book to boys in grades 3rd-4th. It is a chapter book so it may be higher level than most books on my shelf, but it offers a fantasy for boys especially. I think it is important to have books that relate to gender specific, because what a girl might be feeling at this age is much different than what a boy is. Boys are into adventure and the possibility of standing out. This book also discusses girls and being bullied, which are sometimes hard topics to cover. Having a boy as the main character can be helpful in gaining their trust. An activity I plan to go along with this book is writing a personal essay. I would start by discussing the adventures the boys in this book experienced. I would then ask the class to brainstorm what kind of adventures they have had on a piece of paper. After they have determined their favorite, I would ask that they organize a paper with an introduction, body, and conclusion.Paulsen, Gary. 2010. Masters of Disaster. Wendy Lamb Books. less
