I’ve seen a lot of cliches in war movies. For example, the USA versus Germany as if made like Germany is the worst. Sometimes, I’m not standing about this cliche at all. But, how if we see with a reversed perspective with Germany who became the protagonist? It’s rare to get a movie like this but Downfall might be a good answer for those of you who are looking for movies like this. I’ve seen some of the parody spread on the internet and it’s so funny to watch. I searched the title of the movie was and I got it. After watching, it turns out that this movie is actually a pure serious when compared with the existing parody on the internet. I also presented this movie to start the new year. So let’s check it out.

“Downfall,” tells about German who can still withstand Soviet attacks that penetrate Berlin. Adolf Hitler (Bruno Ganz) considers that Germany can still achieve the victory and order his soldiers to survive in Berlin against the Soviets. On his last day after he fell a bit further into defeat, Adolf Hitler became a paranoid, optimistic, depressed person and then took the next step of suicide with his wife Eva Braun (Juliane Köhler). After the death of Adolf Hitler who fell to the Soviets, Berlin then fell and accepted his defeat.

Downfall is a biography of Traudl Junge, a personal secretary of Adolf Hitler living his last day in a bunker and became a witness of what Adolf Hitler did in a bunker. In essence, this movie tells a flashback story from Adolf Hitler on his last day in the bunker before he suicide. So, don’t get me wrong if this movie is actually a clear spoiler inside it because everyone knows the history and biography of Hitler. Downfall based on the true story of a novel by Joachim Fest. Taken from the records of Traudl Junge along with her interviews that you can see in the opening scene and the end, she is one of the most witnesses alive and dead of Adolf Hitler.

If seen from the plot of its story may be a little slow but not too slow. The atmosphere that shown in this movie is a bit inviting psychological in it. The psychological in it’s described very precisely by some figures including Hitler who became paranoid when faced his defeat in front of him. However, I was so amazed this figure because until finally he didn’t want to surrender and prevail to protect Germany. Being in a hopeless situation, Hitler finally chose to commit suicide rather than his body falling into the hands of his enemy. In addition, the psychological effects here are seen from the existing war concepts such as the German army better choose death than fall into the hands of enemies. Both Hitler and his army, this movie has a still authoritative trait in it even though we are know how Adolf Hitler shook a WWII.

What I admire or you who are watching this is the actor who plays as Adolf Hitler, Bruno Ganz. I myself also almost forgot that this is just a movie that encourages a serious impression and tense in it. Bruno Ganz describes a figure that’s very similar to Hitler’s real personality of someone who is sometimes paranoid, assertive, and has a dreaded aura. In spite of that, Hitler also still has a soft personality in it that are still defending his country. In addition, the actors who play a role in this movie also all have a very impression of a panorama of the war that occurred in Berlin. However, this movie may be boring inside because it deals with history or war movies that didn’t focus on the war.

Overall, Downfall is a German movie of a true story of Adolf Hitler. I had no idea that this movie builds its own tension, offers an excellent historical story, and has a mental element in it. Although only nominated for an Oscar, I’m proud to watch this movie and see this actor Bruno Ganz who plays Adolf Hitler with a highly stressful.
