review 1: I think all novels are mysteries. After all, what is going to happen? This book actually is a mystery and I can't remember reading this genre since I was a kid. I enjoyed it. The main character's soaring spirit and deep humanity, with all of its foibles, is immediately likeable. He's striving for balance between the mundane and the spiritual. Aren't we all? A former monk turned LAPD detective, Tenzing Norbu is a character type I'd like to see more of in accessible fiction. This is an easy read. You won't be thinking about it in the middle of the night. (Thanks to Susan for the recommendation!)
review 2: I enjoyed this mystery about a ex-Tibetan monk turned cop, now also an ex-cop turned private detective, though I can't say it is fantastic. The novel at
... moretempts to connect the Buddhist concept of interconnectedness with police procedural; several seemingly unconnected crimes and people link together. Ten, the main character, attempts to balance his beliefs as a Buddhist with his position as private detective while also protecting those he cares about from violent criminals. I enjoyed the character of Ten but worry that the mystery became too complicated in order to make the connections between crimes and people work. However, I do see a lot of potential in this series if the author can develop more justifiable connections that create a complex rather than complicated story. less
