review 1: This was an interesting read. As a stand-alone book in the middle of the series, it does leave a bit to be desired so I have to recommend that the first book be read before perusing this book. I, unfortunately, did not have that luxury so a bit was lost to me.And as for it being the second book of a trilogy, I'm entirely confused as to why the scandal that started in book 1 seems to wrap itself up in this book. I can only assume all 3 books are supposedly written in the same span of time which again though begs the question why this was the second and not final book. The story basically revolves around a scandalous nude painting that Elizabeth poses for. And I guess in book 1, she and her cousins (who respectively have their stories told in the trilogy) are caught trying to... more steal it from a gentleman's club by Peter and his friends. Thus begins this whole thing about a wager on which of the 3 cousins actually posed for it and each male deciding upon one. A little convoluted but I went with it.Throw in some subterfuge with a villain who turns out not to be a villain and you have a makings of an slightly unorthodox romance.
review 2: OK, I love Gayle Callen. I loved this book...until the last 75 pages or so. Everything was going great, some of the plotlines a little unbelievable, but still great. When all of the sudden you started getting fast paced one liners of situations. She was still trying to connect with the sister. The bad guy gives in. The engagement is rocky. The best friend is in love. It was as if the editor told her to wrap it up in less the 100 pages. There was so much detail until this point that it is very obvious when the details drop out.In the last 100 pages, he fights the bad guy and wins, the sister confesses to Elizabeth how she was almost molested, the sister walks with the bad guy down a path, he confesses to her, she runs to their gentlemen's club, Elizabeth chases her dressed as a boy, both men rescue them, the engagement becomes real, the brother comes home, the best friend announces her tendre for the older brother, Elizabeth confesses her old "love" to be just infatuation, and did I mention they end up making love? A little jumbled here but you get the picture. Oh, and the painting disappears. I'm still hopeful about the last installment because as I said, I do love Gayle Callen. Hopefully this was just the info book - you know, the one in the middle that is intended to drop a load of information down and not much else. less
