review 1: This wasn't a great read. I think part of that is because from the outset, we know that Rebecca is the chick in the painting. So all the three guys and three girls playing coy about who it really is rings false. The h/h are pretty one-dimensional characters. She was sick as a child. He had a crappy childhood due in part because of the scandal surrounding the necklace. Apparently, Callen thinks that's about all we need to know about these characters to want to read more. Secondary characters are pretty weak so I'm not interested in reading about the other two women. Some of the dialogue did not sound realistic, especially with the male characters.The real guilty party and the reasons behind the stolen necklace are pretty lame. I think I was supposed to feel sympathetic, but... more mostly I just rolled my eyes. I don't think I'll be reading anything else by this author.
review 2: I liked this better than Never Marry a Stranger, but this still isn't reread (3.5 or higher) worthy for me. I liked Rebecca; she wasn't willing to rely on Julian, unwilling to let others keep her down after having been sick for so long, willing to take risks. I liked Julian - he earned their money, willing to defer to her when she wanted to contribute, respected her as a woman and treated her as an adult worthy of admiration. While I loved how their relationship grew so gradually, I didn't like that I never really felt their sexual chemistry. That spark that usually gets me giddy, I feel, was missing. I've really only been reading this series so that I can get to Susanna's story, but so far of the three I've read (Never Marry a Stranger, Scandalous Lady, and Scandalous Engagment) this has been the best. less
