review 1: This book was everything I've ever wished in a contemporary novel. In order to fully enjoy this history you will need to be okay with some unrealistic streaks of luck and a spoiled rich (but not white) girl for a main character. I hated Pia in the first chapters, that ain't-got-no-time-for-your-drama kind of hate. But don't worry, she grows on you, at the same pace she grows into an adult... Well, kind of. This is not a pretentious book full of metaphors and flowery words. This is a simply written, laugh-out-loud-several-times kind of book. It stood out from other books in the genre specially because it wasn't focused on a quest to find the perfect men, which is ridiculously common. This was about finding your place in the world and discovering what is the thing that makes... more you excited to get up to do every morning (Unless it's cold and rainy and you spent your whole night reading. Even if you find your dream job you can't be happy under those circumstances. It's just not human). Yes, I know this sounds cliche. And it is. But it's still real, that quarter life crisis deal is really real, and everyone goes through it. How could you not? How are you expected to transition from a student into a full time worker in the real world without at least a tiny crisis? The biggest message in this book to me was that no one can. The only difference is that some people are better at hiding than others.
review 2: I saw 'Brooklyn Girls' while I was scrolling through a list of books to read during the summer and as soon as I read the first line of the blurb I wanted to read it ASAP: "Jobless. Clueless. Topless on Facebook."There was something really intriguing about this, mostly because I had never seen a book in the "new adult" genre and I didn't think it would have such a blunt and funny opening line of a blurb. Sadly the book did not live up to my expectations. I wasn't crazy about the main character, Pia. She was funny at times but overall not my favourite protagonist. I also would not have read this book if I knew food trucks were to heavily involved in the plot. On the other hand there was moments when I was wanting everything to work out for Pia and her friends and I liked that it did have a happy ending. If you want a fast, fun, easy read go for it. For me Brooklyn Girls was ok, it wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing either. less
