review 1: This was a great book to read in the "urban fantasy" genre for several reasons: the old West setting is definitely weird, but not in any one-off sense. Files is building a robust universe with rules and then breaking them. It challenges commonly accepted roles in both fiction (magic users) and society (sexual orientation). So far, my favorite aspect of the book is the way the story slyly changes from one about chasing villains to one about the villains themselves and their relationships. The Western slang is a hoot to read and my only regret is the occasional slog through the descriptions of magic. Still, even those served their purpose in helping to understand the bigger picture.
review 2: Again, I would shoot some weird mirror-footed Aztec god type guy for a
... morefraction of a star here because I felt that the writing itself was better than a straight-up 2... I think my greatest problems were around the (what I felt was an) awkward overlay/combination of Aztec mythos. Those sections, for whatever reason (and I am having a hard time putting a finger on it) did not work for me, as much as I wanted them to...and I really did want to enjoy this book more than I did. Will I read the sequel? Probably... less
