review 1: I had really low expectations for this book. Like REALLY low. In fact, the only reason I read it was because the main character was a trombone player. And since I play trombone, I felt it my duty to read this book (yes I'm a nerd, deal with it). So, like I said, I had really low expectations for this book. Now when I first started reading I was bored and a little bit thrown that it was told to you, or in the story told to Mr. R. Besides that I thought Gabe's character was real and the supporting characters added to the story. The part that had me sold was when they chucked water balloons at the cheerleaders. What band kid doesn't dream of that?
review 2: I had trouble getting into this book at first. I Chunk (Gabe?)'s voice was pretty obnoxious, and the idea of
... more him narrating to a police officer was irritating. But once the story took off I actually got into the way the book was written. It was a hell of a lot of fun. I think Gabe wasn't an especially strong narrator, but his voice was fun and memorable even if it did annoy me. I would have liked to get inside the heads of the other characters a little bit more instead of having Gabe control the entire experience of the story, but I can see why Herbach wrote it this way. It definitely allowed for the twist at the end. I liked this book more than I thought I would, and I'm happy I decided to finish it. A fun read. less

Combine all the stereotypes of fat boy stories and you get this awful glop.
