review 1: The science was really bad. I mean, really bad.The worst part was one of the scientist characters castigating another character for his 'bad' science education..then the scientist exposed the authors' terrible science education instead. If all the ice caps were to melt, sea level would rise at most by 180 feet or so. If the polar icecap got blitzed by an asteroid (as in this novel according to the scientist character) sea levels would not rise by much given how that ice was displacing the water anyway. Put some ice cubes in a glass, fill it with water. Note the water level. Come back after an hour. The water level would be the same. Only the melting of icecaps on land like Greenland and Antarctica would cause significantly higher sea levels.
review 2: This
... more book surprised me. I decided to read it without knowing much about it and it sucked me right in. The setting was very imaginative and very detailed. I really enjoyed all the little touches that made it more real. I don't want to give any of that away, because I think it was really fun to read. The author creates a lot of tension during the high points of the conflict. It was really hard to put this book down at times. I found the central characters likable and realistic, though they probably could have been fleshed out a bit more. The conflict and the love story were both compelling and interesting, even to a cynic like me. less
