Black Forest Cake

If I can walk into any confectionery and choose my favourite cake, the classic Black Forest gateau will be winner by a mile each and every time, and I mean what is not to like …. layers of chocolate cake, whipped cream and cherries …. absolutely heaven!!!!

For those of you that have heard of this cake but never tried it, here is the reason you should try this … Black Forest cake consists of layers (2 – 4 layers) of chocolate sponge cake sandwiched with whipped cream and cherries and it is topped with extra whipped cream, maraschino cherries and chocolate shavings. Traditionally Kirsch is added to the cake and it is this ingredient, with its cherry pit flavour and alcoholic content, that gives the dessert its flavour (and yes of course it is packed with calories).

There are many recipes out there that will give any home cook the guidance to make this absolutely divine cake, so bring out the master baker in yourself and go and Google a recipe and make it yourself. One tip I can give is that you should not skimp on the ingredients (cheap ingredients and fake cream, will not give you the original, classic cake) yes it is an expensive cake, but trust me it is worth every cent!!
