review 1: This is a magical story. Yes, it has magic in it, but it is also magical in the telling. When 11 year old Gabriel realizes that he can communicate with ravens, it isn't really a shock, since he's found out from reading his father's journals, that his father had the same gift. Now, Gabriel's father is missing, and with the help of his new raven friend, Paladin and several other close friends, Gabriel goes searching for him. The group must fight against evil and overcome their own fears in order to help Gabriel's father. The writing is lively and wonderfully engaging (I loved the dedication!). The characters really draw you in to the story. Gabriel and his fiends make you want to be a part of their little group, and their big adventure.I highly recommend this book for middl... moree grade readers, and also for older, adult readers who enjoy a good tale. I can't wait to share it with my grandson.
review 2: One of my 4th grade students gave this to me to read. It's an enjoyable animal quest fantasy. Many of the plot twists and rules of magic seemed convenient, and the characters are not well developed. Nonetheless, the story has enough ancient magic in our world to be interesting, and readers will surely find themselves looking at birds through a new lens. I would recommend Silverwing by Kenneth Oppel to anyone who enjoyed this book, as it's still the best animal fantasy ever written. Those who liked the riddles, puns, and wordplay in this book might also enjoy The Phantom Tollbooth. less
