review 1: This was an excellent anthology, much better than most I have read. It starts with a foreword from George RR Martin explaining the Dawn of the urban fantasy genre. I read only some of the stories within:Death by Dahlia by C Harris - a very good vampire tale in the Sookie Stackhouse world. A short murder mystery. Hungry Heart by Simon Green - a glimpse into this supernatural detective in London that makes me want to start the series. Hellbender by Laurie King -- a particular mutant race going missing and our detective is on the trail. Interesting, but reminded me of Harris' writings about the vampires coming out and experiments on them. The curious affair of the deodand by Lisa Tuttle - a woman and man detective duo in 1800s London. Great fun and mystery afoot. I wish the a... moreuthor made it into a series!Lord John and the Plague of Snakes by Diana Gabaldon - Loved this Lord John short story set in Jamaica. A complex murder mystery that's engaging even if you haven't read the series. This story takes place after book 2. Sufficient in length, it didn't feel rushed. In red, with pearls by Patricia Briggs - starring detective and werewolf warren smith, this was also a great murder mystery. Very enjoyable protagonist. It makes me want to read the series, as any short story should!
review 2: I read anthologies to introduce myself to different authors that I then look up and read their novels. As of this writing I am only half way through this book and I have already discovered several promising prospects. Some stories are a little too graphic and some a little too utesy-cutesy. But I never expect to like all the stories in an anthology. I am usually happy if I find one or two out of twelve. I do not see this as a waste of time. I can usually tell within a few paragraphs if I like the authors "voice" and the subject matter. If I don't then it is a simple matter to skip to the next story. Even easier on an eReader. If you like gritty detective stories that involve the supernatural then you will meet many new friends in this book. I have. less
