review 1: This is a dark, twisted, Beauty and the Beast type story. Parts of this book were so ugly, they were difficult to read. The abuse, the humiliation, etc. were awful, but the story wouldn't have been the same without it. Lena has lived a life that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. She had to sit by and watch as her father abused her twin brother and all eight of her sisters were sold. Once she turned 18, it was her turn to be sold as a sex slave. The journey to her "master" was degrading and humiliating to her. But in hopes of saving her brother's life, she deals with the abuse. She finally arrives at the castle, her new home, and meets Guy, her master. They have an instant, undeniable connection, though neither acknowledge it. Guy believes he is ugly, marred, and unlovable... more due to the scars on his face and hand. Their sexual chemistry is remarkable, yet Guy won't allow Lena to get close to him, to feel loved by him. He holds a secret that will change everything. "You're the Beauty here. I am the Beast. I brought you to my castle. Kept you against my will.""You were never the Beast. You were always my hero."The book was strange, very dark and somewhat quirky. But I loved it. It was so different from anything I've read. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. 4.5 stars.
review 2: 3.5 stars. There was a really great story in here between Lena and Guy. Lena's childhood is very quiet and lonely even though she was surrounded by siblings because her father was so menacing in his punishments. Once it's her turn to be sold into sexual slavery, she becomes the property of Guy. Although Guy is very entranced by her, he doesn't want anything more than a physical connection because he has his own issues to deal with. While he can be rough with her, he also ignites certain feelings within Lena. She starts to develop feelings for him. This bothered me a little bit because he didn't really treat her all that well but thinking back about Lena's upbringing, Guy's behavior towards her was certainly more kind than some others she has dealt with although kind isn't the best word to describe Guy. He deals with some heavy secrets as well as disgust with himself that prevents him from becoming attached to others. He also keeps Lena at arm's length because he is vulnerable to possible rejection from her due to his disfigured appearance. I liked Lena overall, she had a certain strength to her, the sort that is a survivor at heart, but also comes with a real heart of gold. I never mistook her feelings as Stockholm syndrome. Guy was a good character, too, except he never gave Lena the impression that he cared for her and so it somewhat surprised me that Lena wanted to go back to him so easily, although he did take care of her in his own way. Otherwise, once they reached a certain understanding, they did share something special. less
