review 1: I enjoyed this as much as the other books of his that I have read. A very well written and complex storyline which paints a terrific picture of the clans in Naples. We went there earlier this year and might not have had I read this book first. I think it is slightly too long but kept me interested for most of the time. I did not like the main female, Immacolata, in the story and I usually do prefer books where I like the main character. Having said that it is a very good holiday read!
review 2: Great insight into Naples and the Camorra (local mafia) gangs as well as the world of hostage negotiation. Made into a move called The Sicilian Girl which was interesting but, as usual, the book is much more layered and subtle than the film. Interesting too in that it
... more is a good example of the hip hop/fast cut/lack of focus/failure of depth world we live in. The story moves despite the writing, not because of it. Contrast the old world when often the writing moved (Joyce, Proust, Camus) when the story didn't. Which world you prefer probably depends on your age and whether you can remember before computers . . . before television? less
