review 1: This may be one of the strangest stories I have ever read. I picked it up because McCaughrean wrote one of my favorite books "White Darkness". Pepper is categorized as a J or Junior book for elementary aged children in my library. It is fraught with French, Catholicism, French politics, insurance scandal and has, as a main and most important character, a ragging queen! I really liked this strange tale but it came across a very adult to me and I cannot imagine a 5th grade American child being culturally aware enough to understand half of what is happening and why. I really liked it for it's strangeness, the massive amount of interesting characters and it's delightful and satisfying end.
review 2: This book follows a young boy in France, who has been told that he
... more won't live until his fourteenth birthday. He has lived his life praying and following strict guidelines. As the day of his fourteenth birthday approaches, he breaks away from his life, taking on the persona of a variety of others as he runs from his supposed destiny. From ship's captain, to delicatessen worker, to journalist, to telegram boy, to the foreign legion, he finds himself friends, allies, and adventures. A great tale of belief, self-reliance, and perception. less

LOVED IT. Funny, thoughtful. Cute. Charming. How I sympathize with our young hero Pepper Roux.
