review 1: I have not yet read the previous book - didn't know it existed. And I did have to make some fancy intuitive leaps, but I preferred that to tedious filling in - the book respected one's intelligence that way. It is charming and funny and a great escape without being witless. I am glad I am able to find them at the library, which is how I found this one. I plan to read the previous book, even though I rather "know" what happened, which means that I enjoyed the sense of humor.

I spent most of the book wondering what the 'Pearls' were going to be (the 'Needles' were obvious!)

Good read. The only thing missing are patterns for some of the projects mentioned in the books.
