review 1: I appreciate magical realism and lyrical prose as much as the next person, but after a point there needs to be something substantive for the reader to hold onto - I could have walked away from this book at any point while reading and ended up where I did after slogging through 370 pages. There is a fine line between artful, absurdist whimsy and haphazard self-indulgence... only reason I'm giving it two stars instead of one is because there are brief moments of poignant characterization, there is interesting perspective on the highly diverse melting pot that is the former Soviet Union in the present day, and it was usually not boring (just ultimately pointless).

The strange museum full of replicas of second rate art and the cynical yet sometimes hopeful people scarred by perennial wars and multitudes of social problems add up to a fascinating read with even some humor thrown in. less
