review 1: Words is riveting, truthful, and healing. Words is beautifully written. Approximately every other chapter, the point of view shifts from first person Kaylee to first person Sierra. These shifts are consistently clear and fluid, yet the characters remain distinct. I was particularly stunned by Kaylee's chapters, in which I clearly heard the voice of a hurting twelve-year-old. The character development is masterful, the word choice and composition are nearly as solid. While quite a few cliches were present, Words mainly uses precise language and is absolutely elegantly crafted. An example of this elegance is the imagery, which connects clearly with the story without being overdrawn. The story--with its depth, pain, and longing--is compelling. Most commendable about Words is ... morethe amount of truth these pages contain. Sierra's parents express wisdom memorably, and Sierra's realizations about truth and Christ--the Word--are beautiful. None of this truth feels forced. Reading stories such as Words helps me understand others' suffering (in this story, the sufferings of abuse and grief). Reading Words also encouraged and strengthened me in my present struggle--anxiety. (I especially appreciated the portions concerning guilt.) Because of the constant, solid, effective truth it communicates and because it is expertly crafted, I highly recommend Words. I will likely read more books written by Ginny Yttrup and more books published by B&H Publishing Group.
review 2: Words is a difficult read because it's dealing with some serious subject matter, but it's worth the effort. It's Ginny Yttrup's debut novel, and won her two Christy award nominations (and one win), an honour that is entirely deserved."... an innocent child paid the price for others' poor choices--just like Christ, who was also completely innocent, paid the price for my choices".The innocent child is 10year-old Kaylee, who lives in a remote cabin with her mother's ex-boyfriend, her mother having abandoned her there. He is not a nice person, yet Kaylee's descriptions of him are understated (and prove authors don't need to use graphic language to describe abuse).Sierra discovers Kaylee, and the young girl brings out her protective instincts, instincts she had long buried under the pain of her own sin and grief. As the relationship between the two grows, they are both able to face the past and find healing. Ginny Yttrup doesn't write easy reads, but her books are well-written, dealing with real issues, and overcoming their hardships through faith in God. less
