review 1: I loved this debut novel. All of the characters have depth, and even minor characters like Amy and Lana come off the page with a sense of self. The main character, Tretch, met all the criteria of a great teenage character: awkward yet loveable, self-actualizing while still a little clueless, interesting and imperfect. He's a kid I'm glad I got to meet. I love the diction, including phrases that jumped off the page like "soundtrack to my hard on" and "flapjack residue." This was a "just one more chapter" book for me, where I needed to get things on my to-do list accomplished or get to sleep but kept postponing in order to read a few more chapters. I ended up reading it in a day-and-a-half, which is a very rare occurrence now that I'm a working mom with young kids. I ... morehave to really dig a book to sacrifice sleep for a few more chapters, and I really dug this book. I hope this will be the first of many books by Will Walton.
review 2: Will Walton captures the voice of first, dazzling, hopeless love with protagonist Tretch Farm, who's fallen for his best (straight) friend, Matt. Tretch is smart as all get out but a bit of a mess. You can't help pulling for him, even though you know Matt's unlikely to feel the same. Because anything could happen, right?What I loved best about this book were the families: Tretch's solid, loving parents, grandparents, and brother who kinda sorta have to have figured out he's gay even if they haven't mentioned it. And Matt's two dads, Pop and Dad, determined to make a go of an arts cinema in a small town whose citizens are not quite sure what to make of the husbands. I'm looking forward to Will Walton's next book now and feel very grateful to have been an early reader. less
