review 1: This book left me with a painstaking decision to put it down at night and go to sleep. It was creative to use the analogy of 'mice' to describe the attributes of being fearful, submissive and predated by others (the cats) and victimized. Shelley was bullied and victimized by the strangers who used to be her best friends. It seemed like her friends evolved from mouse to cats that prey upon her. It was unbelievable that an event of burglary event caused her to transform into a creature who would fight for herself, and she conjured into someone being pushed against her limits of meekness. She switched herself from the flight to fight mode, willing herself to protect the family and her present, when eventually her mom also changed alongside her and became bolder by killing the... more burglar herself. However, complex emotions, especially fear, still lingered and became something stronger and powerful with various possibilities on how the burglar, Paul Hannigan, would revive from the grave of rose bed to haunt her. I really felt my pulse quicken when fearful expressions were used to describe her thought process and her unsettling mind. I was quite taken aback by the sudden twist in story when another character came into play who knew their secret. For the remaining parts, you just have to read yourself to know. Though the part on murder is pretty disturbing, I'm glad that Shelley and her mom developed themselves into more fearless and confident creature.
review 2: I'm going to put this as a 3 but I feel like it doesn't best represent this book at all. If you love murder mysteries, hideous circumstances but a happy ending then you will like this book.In a way I want to give this four stars, because in its genre it is an interesting and gripping read. The idea that these two 'mice' women could be caught up in what they were is a morbid but entertaining plot. However I also could easily have given this novel only two stars as this was not my sort of story at all. I found it for the most horrific, as its attention to detail paints a rather foul picture of humanity - that is, we can rationalise our actions easily and manipulate ourselves into thinking we're doing the right thing.I have also come to the conclusion that Shelley, the protagonist, is for the most part a sociopath and rather than feeling happy about the ending that was given, I found myself hoping that it would not end up ok. This girl, who bluntly says "kill him Mum" and even states that she feels no remorse for what she has done is left to a happy ending where she imagines herself brutalising the bullies who attacked her earlier in the novel. For me, personally, this book is not my thing AT ALL. These characters could justify their actions unflinchingly and that did not sit well with me. I even found myself searching the internet for the ending of the novel, just so I knew what was coming! I couldn't bare the thought of reading another murder at the hands of these two "victimised" women. So I have given it a 3 simply because I can't choose between the two extremities. less
