review 1: I went between a 3 and 4 on this, but ended up with a 3. The setting and the details are original and very interesting, but the main character isn't really a revelation -- if you read enough mysteries set where there are "native" people, you'll find that the main character is bound to be a shaman/magic man of some kind who is torn between the spirit world and the earthly world. Whatever, I like those characters, so I liked this book. I'd read the rest of the series, because I enjoyed reading about the Solomon Islands. I mean, who knows anything about the Solomon Islands?!
review 2: Started this on kindle on 27th Feb on recommendation of Sandy. Reminded me about a set book we had at High School called 'Pattern of Islands' but I think that was an autobiography.
... moreThe background knowledge of custom ways in the Solomon islands are very intriguing. Here we have both the Church and the British government trying to reform the native peoples in the name of so-called civilisation. However, the detective story keeps you interested. I may well try another of this series. less

Very interesting as it is set in the Solomon Islands and a very exotic world.
