review 1: With the hundred year anniversary of the start of WWI, I wanted to find out more about the assassination that seemed to be one of the triggers of the war. An accidental heir to the throne, Franz Frederick was the reluctant choice of Franz Joseph I. Take that trepidation and mix that with Franz F's desire to marry for love (to a woman not his equal), a foundation of political distrust and hatred is built between Franz Joseph I, other European Royals and his heir. In spite of his wife and children being ostracized and not "recognized" as part of the Royal family, it was clear he took his duty seriously and truly loved his family. This is a book that looks at the events leading up to and the aftermath of the Assassination of the Archduke and his wife as seen through the ... morelense of his family.
review 2: The 100th anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian-Hungarian throne, and his wife is later this month (June 28), so it was appropriate to read this book. It is a book that is sympathetic to Franz Ferdinand and his morganatic wife Sophie and the authors back up their sympathy with evidence. Most interesting to me is the possibilty of an Austrian conspiracy in the assassination. At the very least, there was great negligence in the lack of security for an heir to the throne's visit to Sarajevo and apparently there was no investigation of the lack of security afterward. The authors provide information (some of it heartbreaking) of what happened to the three children (aged 10, 12, 13) who were the first orphans of World War I. less

Generally very good but with a clear bias toward Franz Ferdinand and Sophie
