review 1: Of course people can be good without god...but can people really have meaning, purpose, and community in their lives without religion? Epstein makes a convincing case that the answer is "yes." He also makes a convincing case that religious and non-religious people have more in common than they might think, and yes, we can all get along. He is very respectful of religious people and religious beliefs, while making a firm case against the necessity and logic of those beliefs - quite an impressive feat!!!This is an important book for anyone who wants to find more meaning and purpose in their life, anyone who wants to understand (or help others understand) how their non-religious family member or friend can seem like such a good person (it's because they are!) and for anyone w... moreho wants more peace and harmony in the world...This book contains a brief encapsulation of Humanist thought and history, as well as many practical suggestions for being a proud and good Humanist, and getting along and finding common ground with those who have different beliefs (or to use Epstein's preferred term, "lifestance")...
review 2: It gets a bit too touchy-feely in the second half. I should have expected it since the author is a humanist "chaplain". He wants humanists to do the things religious people do—meet on Sundays, have buildings, do weddings and funerals—basically turning humanism into something that is not secular at all, but just another faith in a pluralistic inter-faith society. Might as well just go full-bore Unitarian. Frankly, I'd rather spend my Sundays watching football or mowing the lawn... And if I wanted to give away my money I'd help other poor people instead of contributing to YABF (yet another building fund). less

Refreshing. Does not open the debate about whether or not God exists, nor does it trample religion.

Interesting overview about the possibilities of secular humanism as a force for good.

Longer than it needs to be to make its point, but the pointis an important one.

Great inspiration for atheists who consider themselves Humanists.

3.5, not as nasty as Hitchens was, much more reasonable.
