review 1: I loved this re-imagined fairy tale set in tsarist Russia. The characters are all so appealing - Elena both strong and vulnerable, Cat both regal and real - not to mention the “secondary” characters (who really form the backbone of the story), Baba Yaga, the narrator, the tsar’s godson and the great aunt. Although it is hefty at 450+ pages, the action is such that it feels like a much shorter book!
review 2: This book combines all of my favorite genres: historical fiction, fantasy, adventure! It reminds me very much of The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly. There are fairy tale characters, like Baba Yaga, interacting with regular everyday people as they struggle and grow through adversity. It reads almost like a screen play, so I am not surprised
... morethere is a film adaptation currently being developed. Gregory Maguire's writing style provides humorous depictions of dramatic scenes, but also quotes full of wisdom for life. One of my favorites so far: "...perhaps more good is done in the name of muddling through uncertainty than is done hacking away with the righteous sword of self-confidence." less
