review 1: I was between the ages of 3 and 7 when the Doors were on the main stage. Too young, perhaps, to understand their lyrics, but not too young to know every one of them. Sharing a room with my brother, nine years my elder, I was raised on the Doors.This book went a long way toward explaining their lyrics and fitting them into what was going on at the time. It also had me belting out the lyrics on my way to work, while doing the dishes, or even at work. There was too much description of particular concerts and what not, but overall the book was well done.I listened to it as an audio book. As usual, Blackstone Audio gets high marks for the production.
review 2: I'm really digging Marcus' approach lately, focusing on individual musicians and groups, and I think t... morehis Doors book is the most successful of his recent monographs. There's also a dearth of good writing about the Doors, and as good music writing generally (but not always) should, this book made me eager to return to the music. So I've been listening to a lot of Doors stuff for the past week, with the first album in especially heavy rotation, and remembering those four or five months when I was maybe fourteen or so and the Doors were absolutely the coolest thing I'd ever heard. less
