review 1: If you want a story set in New York City, this book has great maps and will show youngsters how someone can be so close yet so far, and how our lives can easily pass by others, unless something or someone intervenes. An appropriate quote "the stranger is lonely in the midst of a million..." by Twain will likely be unappreciated by the younger set. Like the busy city, the illustrations are busy and provide lots to explore. Sometimes Herman looks like Lyle the Crocodile by Bernard Waber. Other illustrations have the Richard Scarry busy-ness about them. The story is strong, and could stand on its own.
review 2: Herman and Rosie are going to be great friends, they just don't know it yet! You can almost hear the soulful sounds of jazz coming through in this book a
... mores the two friends, who haven't met yet, play and sing their music. Herman and Rosie soon find out that music can bring people together! I like the end pages that have a map of New York City. This book would pair well in a friendship theme with books like Frog and Toad and Elephant and Piggie. less

Eh. The storyline didn't seem like it would grab kid's attention.
