review 1: Well, you kind of get thrown into this story don't you?I wish there was more about the world in this book. I constantly had to stop and try to figure out what a particular creature or word meant, Edwards just threw in made up words which could mean a greeting, a creature, a name, a god or a ritual or anything really. Sometimes it was ok, as she'd name a creature and then on the next page she'd describe it in better detail so you could figure out that it was a bear like creature (the ursus), etc. I'm figuring these people are insect-like? or more spider like? they have spinner and eat people after death. A brilliant new idea that I've never read before, the world could be SO good! But there was just not enough information and I felt lost and thrown around, too much happened... more in such quick succession that I never had a chance to keep up. I think perhaps Edwards needs to take a breath and enjoy the journey. I finished this book in 3 hours, but I really felt it could have been drawn out for another 2 or so hours quite easily, it had so much to give, but was too fast paced. Which I feel made it a bit messy. Some of the word order was a little messy as well : "I can't rejoice in Rhys and my wedding if this burden is on my heart" hmmmmAt one point, the books order went wonky:....."who's cleaning" I rested my palm against my middle, I hoped my name wasnt the answer. Hours later my stomach teetered on the edge of upset...............................Perhaps sensing my unease, Rhys settled the issue "I'll do it".........So we Are in the present, then hours later, then back in the present. This didn't make sense to me.The relationships felt rushed - and we were given time constraints on their 'marriage'- but i couldn't enjoy it because it was just thrust in my face. And everything Rhys was, was a lie really, he isn't a flesh eater, nor in the end experienced in the bedroom. If this book went longer I would have liked to explore his life and reasonings a bit more.This is the kind of book, where you just have to accept things are the way they are. one clan is rebelling against another - accept it, don't try and figure out which clan is which and what kind of people they breed, our main clan is under attack, that's it. There's tapestries or something that hang up with peoples life threads in them. Don't ask questions, that's just how it is. A railroad of a book. I'm sad I can't read more about these characters as the next one is from others point of view. read this book! I only gave it 3 stars because of the way it was written, too quick for my liking and made me feel like I was skimming, rather than reading. But the idea is AMAZING, the concept of this world is so fresh, and sexual tension perfect and challenges views, preconceived ideals of each race between races made me think about my own thoughts on different classes. we can't help where we are born. Love it! . I've already bought the next book. And hopefully all the knots are pulled out.
review 2: oh how i wanted this book to be awesome. spider people. creepy and gross and awesome? but it wasn't awesome. it introduced all this side plot and spin off and never closed any doors. i know it is a series, but sleeping with the dude you got yourself hitched to really isn't closure. and there was a lot of random lust filled moments. but no real tension, no real drama. it was weird, but not in the way i wanted it to be weird. =( If the second book ever goes on sale, i might pick it up, but currently, can't see it being worth the $5. i wish it was. so badly. the world building is GREAT. less
