The Confessions of Henrietta Lightfoot
review 1: At a very young age, Henrietta has to learn how to take care of herself. And we get a front row seat to the show. Throughout the story, there are many roles she is called upon to play, most of which have nothing to do with what she ACTUALLY wants to do. She just knows that to get where she wants to be, this is the muck she has to travel through to get there. It is amazing to see how little opportunities women had at the time, and the things they had to do to get by. Without her resilience, Henrietta surely would have died in squalor, but you see her rise up to the challenge and find herself becoming stronger than she ever was. ... moreirst of a trilogy by Hallie Rubenhold, "Mistress of My Fate" was an interesting read. The author is an 18th century historian, and it shows. The narrative is evocative of other "confessional" style novels of the 18th century, such as Moll Flanders. The prose can be florid, and the heroine somewhat hyperbolic at times, but again, it fits with the period. The story was overall fascinating, and I'm excited for the next books in the series. less
