review 1: I don't know how to review this one. It didn't flow as well as it should have. The "might have" paragraphs seemed forced. The 'voice' of the neighborhood boys (the main driving force of the short novel) wasn't 'male' enough. I'm tired of reading books where the female writer has put it in the male voice and misses just a bit on the tone. Some of the blurbs compared it to The Virgina Suicides and The Lovely Bones - I've not read TVC but I have read TLB - and nope, it doesn't hit that mark at all. I will not go out of my way to purchase her next novel, but if it is on the sales tables at a book store, I might consider it.
review 2: actual rating: 3.5I was so interested in this book from the moment it caught my eye at the public library. It took some time to
... more get over the uncanny resemblance to the Virgin Suicides but once I was able to, I found it was an intriguing and, oftentimes, intoxicating story. I myself felt like the boys of the book, obsessing over Nora and what had happened to her that night she disappeared. I got so caught up in all the storytelling and daydreaming detailed in the book that, by the end, I was left really wondering: did Nora really die or not? I devoted so much time and energy making it through this book by checking it out numerous times and I'm so glad I kept with it. It was worth the read. There are still parts of the story that have stayed with me and honestly, that's all you could want/ask of a book! less
