review 1: This was a strikingly pretty manga, with several frames that I wanted to copy and pin to my wall, but it was also remarkably soul-crushing. I know, I shouldn't go into Madoka Magica expecting a good time, but even by those standards, this was remarkably depressing. That being said, it was still excellently done, though I have to note that Mami and Sakura were my favorite characters in the anime, predisposing me to like this. The characterization was spot on, the way their friendship develops made sense, and it was nice to actually get to know Mami in this version of the story. At the end of the volume, there was an imperceptibly marked time jump that left me temporarily puzzled and rules this out as a readable side story for people who don't know the anime. The inside cove... morer comics depend on pre-knowledge of the characters, too, but since they're character and not plot driven jokes, they still make some sense.
review 2: So fun to see Kyoko and Mami interacting, since we never got to see that in the anime! Well... Fun is one way to put it. This volume may have left me emotionally scarred, but it was worth it. I haven't read any of the other Madoka spinoff mangas (I heard they weren't very good...) so this was my first exposure to the art style of the manga. I was impressed!! I thought it artfully captured the chaos of battle without being confusing. Very beautiful style. Raises some very interesting issues about morality, selflessness, and sacrifice. less
