The Big Sick Review

I may have just seen one of the best movies of 2017, and I’m a little upset with myself that it took me this long to discover it. For months I have heard nothing but huge praise for this movie, but never got around to going to see it. So, with a new year being upon us soon I figured let me see this movie and judge it for myself because who knows I may end up loving, and could crack into my top 10 films of this year. The movie I obviously chose to see was The Big Sick, and it’s based on a true story that revolves around a Pakistan comedian named Kumail Nanjiani. He falls in love with an American woman named Emily but struggles as their culture clash. When Emily suddenly comes ill and falls into a coma, Kumail finds himself forced to face her parents, his family traditions, and himself. So, let’s dig a little deeper into The Big Sick.

To start, the writing in this film was stellar mainly because the people who actually lived this story wrote it. Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily V. Gordon did a phenomenal job of telling this story about this real event that happened to them that by the end of the film it almost felt as if I knew who these people were, what made them ticked, what they like, and so much more. I have a hard time not seeing them get a nomination for Best Original Screenplay. While I’m talking about the characters in this movie the acting was superb by everyone across the board.

Kumail Nanjiani was obviously great since he was playing himself, but I must admit before this film I don’t think I ever heard of him. Safe to say that I now know him, and I hope we get to see him in more films down the road because he’s great as both an actor and a comedian. Zoe Kazan who plays Emily his wife in the movie was terrific as well that their on-screen chemistry together was magnificent to watch. You bought into that relationship right from the very beginning when they met till the very end of the film. Ray Romano who plays Emily’s dad was solid and a little surprising because I only know him from a television show, but the guy was amazing and hope we can see him tackle more dramatic roles like this. But my favorite had to come from Holly Hunter who plays Emily’s mother. She was sweet, caring, feisty at times, but charming to watch.

The comedy I cannot praise enough. Almost every joke that I heard I couldn’t help from laughing because they all felt organic and authentic to hear. They weren’t necessarily jokes it was just how funny life can be sometimes when something happens that you least expect. That’s what I appreciated most about this film was that it was grounded, felt real, and didn’t try too hard to make you laugh. All that credits goes back to the remarkable writing by Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily. Finally, nice job by filmmaker Michael Showalter for presenting this beautiful screenplay and telling this story. I’m not too familiar with him, so I had to go back and look at his filmography and for the most part this is pretty much his first major directorial film. He did a fantastic job and hope to see him direct more films in the future. As far as negatives go I don’t have any. I loved every minute of this movie and can’t wait to pop it into my Blu-ray player to watch it again.

So, in conclusion this was a movie I absolutely loved and has now made its way into my top 10 films of 2017. Also, make sure to keep an eye out for that soon as I will be announcing what films I loved the most this year, but safe to say this one will be in it. Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon did a wonderful job writing and telling this true story about themselves and letting us the audience into their lives. I don’t who will win the award, but there’s no way this film doesn’t get nominated for Best Original Screenplay come March at the Oscars.

Both Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan were fantastic and had some of the best on-screen chemistry I have seen this year. The rest of the cast were all solid and gave great standout performances with my favorite coming from actress Holly Hunter. The comedy was amazing because of how real it felt, and the directing by Michael Showalter was superb. I don’t have any gripes with this films at all. Please do yourself the favor and watch this movie as soon as you can because I guarantee you will come away loving just as much as I did. Mark my words, this movie will receive a nomination for Best Picture at the Oscars. Overall, I’m going to give The Big Sick an A!
