review 1: If you like to listen to Garrison Keillor, you should appreciate this delightfully fun (and funny) parody of his Lake Woebegone books. I can't speak to the print book, but I highly recommend the audio version. Phil Gigante gives an absolutely fabulous performance-- his voice, tone and cadence are so much like Garrison Keillor's. Each character has a distinct voice and his accents are wonderful. As you would expect, Lake Woebegotton is full of unique, colorful characters and the story is somewhat slower paced, with quirky tangents and ramblings, much like the Lake Woebegone books. However, it is precisely these things that make the book such a delight. I laughed out loud several times while listening to this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. You do not need to be a zombie fan... more to appreciate this book. It has its moments of goriness (due to the subject matter), but it's not overwhelming. I am so glad I accidentally stumbled upon this book and decided to give it a try.
review 2: When I picked up this book in the bookstore, I thought it was meant to be a zombie parody of Garrison Keillor's books/radio show. It was but I didn't realize the book was actually written by Keillor himself as a parody of his own work. I've never listened to or read any of Keillor's book but it was clear in the first chapter that it was meant to mimic his rabbling style. The prologue is full or run on sentances and train of thought writing. As the book progresses, that style gets toned down into a more normal narrative. The book was interesting but not exceptional. The book is told in three parts with part one being day one of the zombie outbreak. The second part is a collection of 20 vignettes that it tells you up front are not in chronological order so the next 20 chapters address several issues but you have to go back and forth to get the order. The last chapter is the spring thaw as the zombie outbreak starts in the middle of winter in Minnesota. I honestly think the best part of the book was the comments on the back cover from other notable Minnesotans (Dob Bylan, Gesse Bentura, and Charles S. Mulchz Jr). less

I got to 25 % and quit. It was ok, just not for me. Imagine Fargo meets zombies and there you go.

Never got past page 25. The affected folksy tone turned me right off.
