review 1: 3.5 stars--Decent story, likeable characters, but something didn't quite work. Part way through, I started listening to the Audible recording, and it was awful. I'm sure that colored my opinion of the book somewhat, but the story still had some rough spots.Audible recording--I have never returned an Audible book until this one. I could not stand the narrator. He was totally emotionless. His reading was incredibly wooden--every syllable was clearly enunciated. His voice was whiny and way too young sounding--had no authority--definitely not in line with police officers, FBI agents, and mobsters. There was no differentiation between voices of characters except for one guy who was supposed to sound Hispanic but actually came across more as Russian. His grunts/groans/moans soun... moreded like they had been prerecorded and inserted randomly where such a sound was indicated. A real disappointment! So glad Audible has such an easy return policy. I will certainly listen to samples now before I buy.
review 2: I'm not sure why my mind automatically went to Mexican Heat when reading this book. Yes, there are 2 men in dangerous conditions for the greater good so there was that comparison. But that is really where it stopped. The emotional tension was missing in US. At least for me. I know I was supposed to feel it. But I didn't. I didn't like Dem. He waffled between characters. The crime was just far too horrific for me to feel comfortable reading about it. And the use of pets made this feel a bit like slave fic. Just not for me. I read this because of Polyester Prince. Ms. James has the ability to make me grin from ear to ear and I want That book again. less
