review 1: 1 Medieval & 2 American Christmas stories. Heather Graham - 3 stars. I can't put my finger on what's wrong with this story. It's well written & the plot is somewhat original. I gave it 3 stars for that. Rebel girl must give her home to the Union army for their headquarters. This story plays out over 2 years. I didn't really like the girl that much either. She constantly calls the hero "Yank", even though they are both born & bred in Virginia. She's always right & never listens to any reason. She's also beautiful to the point of inducing nausea. I don't know, just not my favorite story. Jo Beverley - 5 stars! One of my FAVORITE romance short stories! It's really tricky to write a medieval romance story. They saw things a lot differently back then. Men were allowed to beat ... more& abuse their wives. There was nothing much a woman could do about it. They died from festering wounds & diarrhea. JB, however, takes a story about 2 feuding families & turns it into magic! Joan must take her cousin's place as the virgin at the castle's live Christmas procession because her cousin is secretly pregnant. Joan THINKS it's by the Golden Lion, the head of the family that's feuding with her family. Joan is kidnapped by the Golden Lion & after a night spent in a cave hiding from her uncle, she falls in love. How could she not? Edmund, the Golden Lion is described as "Beautiful as St Michael, brave as St George, protector of the weak, defender of the right, dire vengence on all who do evil." However, Joan is average in looks & on the plump side. She also has a sharp tongue & uses it frequently. Somehow, Edmund falls for her. GREAT story!! Candace Camp - 4 stars. This story is set in the Panhandle of the old west. I'm guessing in the 1890s. Widowed woman with a 9 year old son must find work, or sell her son's legacy - his land. She finds out a rich old rancher needs a cook to feed his ranch hands & begs for a job. She then finds out he's not old, but he IS very grouchy & loves a verbal argument. Nice story that takes 4 months to lead up to Christmas. Long before then, you can figure out what's going to happen! A whole lot of cooking & cleaning gets done in this story! Enjoy! Merry Christmas!!
review 2: This was a good Christmas historical romance anthology. I enjoyed the characters and how each story took me back to a different period of time. I found myself feeling for each other characters as they battled their feelings for the other. You usually know that most end in triumph but you you never know what struggle you'll go through til you read their stories. Good Christmas read for those who love a good historical romance. Passionate yet not so erotic that it will have you hiding the book from other eyes. :-) less
