review 1: The title invites comparison with "Alice in Wonderland" and this book shares its mixture of the bizarre and the ordinary, hovering between dream and nightmare. The nightmare elements are those of the present day, such as the surveillance culture and genetic engineering. It is very funny in places. I like the way Helen Smith's mind works and I like the way she writes. The book also shares with Lewis Carroll's a disjointed feel; I do not know whether this is deliberate or not.As an aside: A shig, if it existed, would be the offspring of a ram and a sow; the offspring of a boar and a ewe would be a 'peep' (or 'piep').

... moreead it slowly and pondered all of the life lessons Alison has to offer. It is certainly a different book than I usually read, which is perfectly fine. I understand the comments of the 1 and 2 star reviewers, and I understand the 4 and 5 star reviewers too. It is certainly not a book for everyone. I will certainly try Helen Smith's other books. less

Seriously terrible. I don't even know what the point was or what even happened.

Clever, quirky, and infused with just a hint of magic.
