review 1: In this beginning of this book, I almost expected there to end up being a twist. But the way the story was written, the book is more of a development of the character and the traumatizing event that he is coping with. This is the first book that I have read regarding a teen dealing with PTSD, and as gut-wrenching as many of the parts of the book are, the author sums up the story well - his story was told as accurate as possible and it is a serious disorder that anyone can experience (not just people serving in the military). It was a touching read, and I'd definitely recommend it for anyone, not just teenagers. It's a great story of misfortune, and a person's strength through this misfortune.
review 2: This is a heart-wrenching, beautifully-written book. Not th
... moree kind that I would normally pick up, but I'm so glad I got the chance to read an ARC! Helene Dunbar has created a one-of-a-kind portrait of a boy in distress who has to dig deep to find the courage and strength to help save himself and someone even more vulnerable than he is from an abusive situation. I know that Gordie's sharply focused story will stay with me for a long time. less
