review 1: I have a difficult time swallowing the full consequences of anarchists/individualists system of society. They take the idea of man must be free, the power and importance of the individual. He even goes to far in saying that a majority of one is still a majority. What a twisted concept. However, Thoreau is the author of Walden, he did live it on his own, without government. He lived what he preached. Yet, unless society as a whole builds their own meager cabins in the woods, government is a necessary and inefficient actor in a civilized world. One must respect his arguments for non-violent protests. His ideas of breaking an evil law in order to live a higher law resonate. His critique of the war with Mexico and slavery are also of note.
review 2: I think
... moreI would understand this better if I knew the context better. The abolition of slavery I obvious, but I don't know enough about the conflicts with Mexico to know what he's getting at there."The government is best which governs least" is a sound principle that especially reverberates in 2012; however, a glance at the comment section of any news website should be enough to convince one that the world is overrun with idiots and jackasses, so that the corollary Thoreau suggests "That government is best which governs not at all" won't fly. less

This book gave me much to think about. How far should one press a love for liberty?
