review 1: This is a fascinatingly interesting idea that the man who wrote the Declaration of Independence and engineered the Louisiana Purchase was perceived as an avid proponent of emancipation but was anything but. The beginning dragged as bit as it was full of historical rhetoric. Then it moves into items of interest about individual slaves, many of whom were related by blood and bore a striking physical resemblance to Jefferson. The last part of the book creates a strong case for Jefferson as a devoted anti-abolitionist.

It is hard to respect Jefferson after reading this book. An excellent and disturbing book.
