review 1: This is the last book in the series, but chronologically, it comes first. Really, any of the books can be read in any order. They're all wonderful. The series concerns an eccentric, artistic family with four highly individual, talented children. Caddy is the eldest. She has a cheerful, engaging temperament, and a special affinity for animals. This book concerns the difficult year when her sister Rose is born; and her friends are starting to move in different directions. Caddy would like everything to stay the same, but it can't, and she has to change too.I've read the entire series to my 10-year-old daughter, and have enjoyed it as much as she has.
review 2: I really enjoy Hilary McKay's writing style, and the Casson family are always fun to catch up with. This
... more story is a prequel to Saffy's Angel, which was the first book I read by McKay. Caddy is twelve and dealing with the beginning of puberty with her best friends, as well as the premature birth of her little sister, who will be the Rose in the later books. Since I knew Rose would thrive and grow, this part of the story didn't have a big impact. I enjoyed Caddy's struggles with her changing friends more, and it was nice to see her father, Bill, in a somewhat more positive light than in later stories. He is a selfish, self-absorbed character, but does love his family, at least as best he can.I will recommend this series to young readers who enjoy realistic, funny stories, such as the Anastasia stories by Lois Lowry. less

This was an absolutely beautiful story of friendships, growing up, and learning to accept change.

Kind of Anastasia Krupnik meets Betsy-Tacy and Tib, only in contemporary-ish England. Lovely.

As good as all the books in this series, which means it's great!
